How to use the Thesaurus

  2. Read the meaning and example sentences, then scroll to Synonyms, Similar words, Describing words, Opposites (antonyms) and Rhymes.
  3. Use Sort to switch between Best match, Most common and A–Z.
  4. Tap any word to copy it, or tap the little arrow beside it to look that word up next.

Good to know

  • Bold words are the everyday ones. In emails, essays and captions these usually read more naturally than rare words, so sort by Most common when you want plain, clear writing.
  • Check the example sentences before swapping a word in: two synonyms can mean the same thing but sound right in different places, like "big" and "significant".
  • Describing words show adjectives often used with your word, which helps when you keep writing "very good" or "really nice".
  • Rhymes are handy for poems, greeting cards, taglines and reel hooks, but read them aloud before using one.
  • Interest over time shows Wikipedia readership or dictionary look-ups for the word over 12 months or 5 years. It hints at interest, but it is not Google search data.
  • It works in English only. Results come from free public word lists, so a rare word or new slang may show few matches; try the Slang Meaning Finder for those.

Questions

What is another word for beautiful?

Common choices include lovely, gorgeous, stunning and pretty, and the right one depends on what you are describing. Search beautiful here to see synonyms grouped by type, plus describing words and examples in a sentence.

How do I find the opposite of a word?

Search the word and look at Opposites, which lists its antonyms; for example, happy gives sad and unhappy. Some words have no clear opposite, and then the section doesn't appear.

How can I stop repeating the same word in an essay or email?

Look up the word you keep using, sort by Most common, and check the example sentences to pick one that fits. Swapping two or three repeated words is often enough to make writing feel fresher.

What is the difference between synonyms and similar words?

Synonyms mean the same thing and can usually be swapped in directly. Similar words are close in meaning or related ideas, which is useful when you want a slightly different shade or tone.

How do I find better words for my Instagram captions?

Search the word you overuse, like amazing or obsessed, and pick an everyday synonym that sounds like you. Describing words and rhymes help with hooks and short lines.

Can I hear how a word is pronounced?

Yes, when your browser supports speech you will see a speaker button next to the meaning. Some words also show their pronunciation written in IPA.

Where do the meanings and word origins come from?

Meanings, example sentences, old forms and word origins come from Wiktionary, and the word lists come from Datamuse. Links to the original Wiktionary pages are shown with each section.

Is this thesaurus free, and what happens to my searches?

It is free with no sign-up. To fetch results, the word you search is sent to Datamuse, Wiktionary and Wikipedia; your recent searches are kept only in this browser and you can clear them with the cross.
